Student Success Tips

Tip #89 Control Concentration and Physical Intensity

I met Rachel, a Sophomore pre-med major at one of my seminars based on my book “College Success Your Way.”  Actually, her boyfriend, Michael brought her up to talk with me after my presentation.

“She’s intense all the time.” Michael said.  “She’s so driven and focused about absolutely everything that I think she’s going to burn out before she even gets to medical school.  I keep telling her to relax and have fun, but she’s afraid she’ll lose her ‘edge.’ You tell her, Crystal .”

As I talked with Rachel more, I understood what Michael was talking about.  Rachel admitted herself that she started out her Freshman year of school determined not to get behind in her classes, and as a result, her life was so tightly managed and controlled, she confided that she was even thinking of breaking up with Michael because she didn’t feel she had the time to give a relationship.

I let Rachel know that in a balanced, focused life, there should always be time for relationships.  And it could be that she is over-controlling her life and likely spending time doing things that don’t even need to be done, just to feel she has control.

Make sure you control your focus and intensity by keeping a clear eye on what you want and what it takes to get it.  Then, be willing to be brutally honest with yourself to make sure that you are doing what needs to be done, when you need to do it.

Pay attention to your body’s natural rhythms and make sure that you are doing your most intensive work when you are naturally clear minded, energetic, and awake.

Give yourself permission to let loose on occasion and have some fun.  If you don’t, you will eventually resent your constant demands on yourself and you will, I promise you, burn out.
