Student Success TipsTip #79 Feed the Need to be
Exceptional
Everyone you know is good at something.
It may not be something you value, but trust me, if they’re
good at it, they value it.
Next time you have the opportunity to have a few minutes of
conversation with someone, ask them what they do for fun.
Get them talking about what they enjoy and you’re likely to
find something they do better than most people.
For example, you may discover that they like to run and they get
up every morning to put in 5 miles before classes. That makes them
exceptional. Not everybody
has the stamina and the discipline to do such a thing.
Generally, when people have a hobby, they know a lot about it.
Simply keep them engaged by saying, “That’s interesting, tell me
more.” Let them know you don’t know anyone else who knows as much as
they do about that particular topic.
I’m sure that’s the truth, and I’m sure they would feel
good about themselves and you knowing that their talents and interests
are noticed.
Make sure when they’re talking that you are truly present and
that you don’t zone out.
Let them know that they sure do know a lot about their hobby and
you don’t know anyone else who knows that much.
Let them know you see them as an expert in this area.
The worst thing you can do in this situation is to argue with
them over details. I’ve actually heard of this happening.
True story. A student
told me that he was talking with someone he met at a party.
She asked him about his hobbies, and when he told her he liked to
go fishing, she went off on some endangered fish species of some kind
and how she hoped he wasn’t fishing for that one.
Yikes! He told me he
left that conversation as soon as possible.
Remember that your purpose it to make them feel exception, not to
find ways to spark a debate. ***************************************** For all 101 Tips on Student Success as a download you can get right now, go to Success Store While you're there, check out my other downloadable
