Student Success TipsTip #39 Get Specific
Want to greatly increase the chances that you will accomplish
your goals?
Of course you do, otherwise, why would you be reading this book? Then get specific about exactly
what it is you want.
Lily Tomlin has a great line “All my life I wanted to be
someone. Now I see I should
have been more specific.”
If you’ve set goals before and never achieved what you had
hoped, examine more closely how you’re wording your goals.
I used to coach one on one when I started my speaking business
and many of my clients would say their goals were to “be rich” or
“to be thin.” Well, if
those were powerful goals, don’t you imagine there would be a lot more
wealthy, skinny people walking around?
But there aren’t many, are there?
You know why? All the
potential in the world won’t help your amazing brain make sense of
such vague objectives as these. Your
goal must be quantifiable whenever possible and it must be measurable.
We are teleological. This
means we move towards what we think about.
If your goals aren’t a clear destination, your brain will take
you all over the place and you’ll really be thrown off course.
The most specific thought that’s embellished with the most
emotion wins your brain’s attention.
Keep this in mind and use it to your advantage by creating very
specific, and measurable goals. ***************************************** For all 101 Tips on Student Success as a download you can get right now, go to Success Store While you're there, check out my other downloadable
