Student Leadership

TIP #89

Work with Ego to Convince Them

Years ago, two professors from New York University ’s Speech Department studied 10,000 real life arguments over a seven-year period.  They listened to husbands and wives, corporate salespeople and counter clerks, politicians and U.N. delegates. They wanted to know who won the most arguments and why.

Overwhelmingly, the people who “convinced” others most often were the people who lead the people they were trying to convince to convince themselves.

Rather than trying to beat down the other person, poke holes in their arguments, and generally try to win by “one upping” the other person (as professional debaters try to do), the successful convincers cultivated the good will of the other person and helped them come to the desired outcome as though it were their own idea.

So back off, don’t bully, and lead by asking them questions that will allow them to convince themselves.
