Student Leadership

TIP #59

Deal Quickly and Fairly with Complaints

One issue people have with trusting their team leaders arises when they believe the leader isn’t responding to their concerns.

You need to make sure that you listen carefully when someone issues a complaint. Ask them specifically what outcome they would like, and how they would like you to help to make that happen.

Deal with complaints as soon as you can. They do not go away on their own, and you will lose respect if you let the problem fester.

Again, you’ll want to deal with all interpersonal conflict in private.  It’s important to not publicly announce to the group that someone is having a problem (more than half of the team doesn’t even notice). You don’t want to stir up trouble, but rather nip it in the bud.
